Red Cross is an international humanitarian organization led by volunteers which aims at providing assistance in case of emergency, reliefs in times of disaster and education. The organization is concerned with alleviating sufferings of human beings. It upholds its commitment to promote the health of the general public. The symbol of this organization is one of the recognized symbols of absolute neutrality and mercy in the entire world. Others include the Red Crescent, emblems and the Red Crystal Flags.
All of the Red Cross groups are under the agency formerly called the International Red Cross. In 1986, this agency changed its name into the Int’l Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement. The alteration of its name was aimed at encompassing various branches in Islamic countries. The Int’l Red Cross Conference is considered as the organization’s highest deliberative body. About Red Cross membership, it is composed of representatives from every national society as well as several international communities. In more than 180 countries across the globe, there are national societies that are all about Red Cross.
The services that Red Cross has been rendering for millions of people all over the world have been expanded ever since the World War II ended. Extensive relief activities for refuges have been undertaken. These activities truly helped solve ethnic conflicts throughout the world. This globally recognized organization is also committed to provide the basic needs of those who have suffered from natural disasters.
When the cyclone and storm struck Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) in 1970, Red Cross coordinated relief efforts. In 1974, a hurricane hit Honduras and in 1988, earthquakes devastated Armenia. In these times of ordeal, the organization lent a helping hand to the needy victims. Undeniably, it gives hope to many people who have become hopeless from disasters that ruined their lives. What makes them different from some other organizations is that they work with a heart and those who help are volunteers and not workers who are paid for their services.
